Preparing for university

preparing for university with an eating disorder

Going to university is a time of huge transition and challenge for most people. This may be particularly challenging for people with an eating disorder, or who are in recovery from an eating disorder. New relationships, new pressures, new eating habits, the need to shop, cook and eat independently, can all present challenges for people for who have battled with disordered eating prior to going to university. It is crucial that, in the run up to going to university, time is spent preparing people for independent living and for the challenges they may face during and following this transition. Occupation therapy is a structured skills based approach that is often recommended to guide and support people prior to and during this huge life transition.

Sessions may focus on:

  • self care

  • coping with emotions

  • forming new relationships, including friendships and intimate relationships

  • meal planning

  • shopping (both food and clothing)

  • cooking

  • social eating

  • diary and timetable planning

  • anxiety management and relaxation techniques

  • maintaining recovery whilst away from home

  • managing a healthy relationship with exercise
