Preparing for Change
The fact that you are reading this means that at least a small part of you is considering change. We know that any decision about change can be a daunting prospect. Although there are often many negative things about living with an eating disorder, it is likely also serving an important function in your life which can make change difficult to contemplate. If you are having mixed feelings about change, this is perfectly understandable. It does not necessarily mean that you are not ready to recover; in fact preparing for change is a normal part of the recovery process and something that your therapist will want to explore with you early in treatment.
The following questions can help you reflect on your readiness to change. It is often useful to revisit these questions on a regular basis to see how your ratings shift over time. Remember, recovery is not a linear process and motivation tends to fluctuate. Your therapist will support you to set realistic, achievable goals that help foster your motivation and move you towards meaningful, lasting change.
